Syrah is the only grape used to make the famous Rhône wines of Côte Rotie and Hermitage, but also forms the backbone of most Rhône blends, including Chateauneuf du Pape. Syrah forms intense wines—deep violet, nearly black color, chewy texture and richness, and often alcoholic strength, with aromas that tend to be more spicy than fruity. Tempranillo is a primary red wine grape for much of Spain, especially those from the Ribera del Duero and the Rioja Alta. It is also a key blending varietal in Port and known by the name of tinta roriz in Portugal’s Douro Valley. The grapes for this wine were grown in the Dunnigan Hills AVA, where both of these varietals grow well.
This blend boasts earthy aromas of truffles, black pepper, and blackberries, with just a touch of vanilla and anise. As it opens up in your glass it exhibits flavors of rich berries, earth, and tannins. Pairs well with hearty and acidic foods such as grilled vegetables with garlic and lemon juice sauce, and wild mushrooms. It has ample tannin and acid to last in the bottle for many years, at least through 2015.
